Lasting powers of attorney: The numbers that matter
An LPA lets you choose who handles your finances or health decisions if you lose capacity, yet too few people in Manchester have one. The Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) registered over 780,000 LPAs across England and Wales in 2022/23, but with Greater Manchester’s population of 2.8 million (and Manchester at 570,000), thousands here still haven’t taken this vital step. Nationally, only 1 in 3 adults have an LPA (YouGov, 2023), leaving many families scrambling when the unexpected happens.
The need is growing. With Manchester’s average life expectancy at 77 for men and 81 for women (ONS, 2022), and conditions like dementia affecting 1 in 14 people over 65 (NHS data), an LPA is more relevant than ever. These stats show why planning ahead with Marley Solicitors isn’t just smart, it’s essential.
What does a lasting power of attorney cover?
There are two types of LPA, and we can help with both:
- Property and financial affairs: Lets your chosen person manage your money, pay bills, or sell property.
- Health and welfare: Gives them authority over your care, medical decisions, or living arrangements.
Once registered with the Office of the Public Guardian, they’re ready to use. We’ll ensure yours is done right, call 0330 999 1888 or email lesley@marleysolicitors.co.uk / yasmin@marleysolicitors.co.uk to learn more.
How much does a lasting power of attorney cost?
We believe in transparent pricing so you know exactly what you’re paying:
- Our fees:
- For one person (both powers): £450 + VAT.
- For two people (both powers): £650 + VAT.
- Registration costs: £82.00 per power with the Office of the Public Guardian.
- Discounts: If your income is under £12,000 or you receive the guaranteed element of Pension Credit, you may qualify for a reduced fee, ask us how.
For example, a single person registering both powers pays £450 + VAT (our fee) plus £164 (2 x £82 registration), totaling £704 + VAT. Two people pay £650 + VAT plus £328 (4 x £82), totaling £978 + VAT. Affordable protection, no surprises.
